Update 06/15/09: Several well trusted sources claim that most likely we have seen a very large coyote. We are still not 100% sure so do several park rangers but nonetheless, this was an exciting experience again.
Earlier this week we posted our trip report about our first wolf sightings in the Tetons (Blacktail Ponds Overlook). As the images that we took are too bad to put them into our gallery we decided to put them in here and open them up for discussion.
On a rainy day we drove through the Tetons and decided to stop at the Blacktail Ponds Overlook. The rain was quite ugly and Eva spotted a bright spot at the far right end close to the treeline. I grabbed the 1D Mark III with the 500mm 4.0 to take a “closer” look and was surprised seeing the ribs of an elk? and a grey predator that we identified as an wolf compared to the size of the ribs to the size of the body and they way he moved – which we were not able to capture with a SLR.
At the visitor center we discussed with three rangers and they were not quite sure themselves either but the image quality is quite poor. The gallery shows the original images as well as some crops. Maybe someone could drop us an email or comment here to confirm our first wolf sighting in the Tetons.
Thanks,
Peter
