After 1.5 days of traveling from Seattle, WA to Gardiner, MT we spend our first half day in the park. With Eva still feeling not well we took it slowly and drove our first round through Lamar up to Cooke City, MT. We were rewarded with blue skies, plenty of sunshine and freezing cold temperatures.
Just after Mammoth Hot Springs there was a crowd of people looking down the hill. Two wolves were relaxing on a hill and potentially watch the nearby kill. It was cold (around -1° Fahrenheit that equals around – 18° Celsius). With the wolves lying in the far distance, in the shade and not much action going on we only took one documentary picture.
We met Bill and Peggy from the Y-Net forum on their last short round before they were driving back to California. Safe travels to you guys – it was nice seeing you again.
As we entered the Lamar Valley temperatures started to drop significantly and Yellowstone showed us the cold but beautiful side in the winter time.
Minus 21° Fahrenheit that is approximately -30° Celsius. Temperatures that neither Eva nor I ever experienced before and even with our winter clothes we felt the cold. The reward was a beautiful view in the Lamar valley with some morning mist across the partly frozen river.
We slowly drove towards Cooke City where we had a nice breakfast, hot coffee and plenty of snow and the feeling being on a racetrack again. Interesting to see so many snowmobiles driving up and down the road. We hit the road again and stopped at Slough Creek where a large amount of cars indicated that wolves would be around. They were and we watched them in the far distance getting closer to a group of bison. Too far away even for the longest telephoto lens so no photos at all.
On our way back we saw two more coyotes, elk and bison. A pretty slow day and a very good start.
Please check our gallery where we are going to upload pictures on a regular basis.
That’s it for today 😉
