This our second day in Yellowstone and temperatures dropped this morning down to -23° Fahrenheit but there was no breeze that brought additional windchill. It was a beautiful day in Lamar with the usual suspects: Bison, elk, bighorn sheep and some mule deer. There is plenty of snow towards Cooke City that is perfect for winter landscape photography but the rest of Lamar and from Gardiner to Tower lacks snow.
We have not seen any wolves today and even the wolfwatchers were rare. Eva is feeling better and we took a hike around Trout Lake. Not a single animal (only an elk skeleton mostly from a recent kill) and peaceful silence. It seemed that we had at least this part of the park on our own.
We pretty much spent the rest of the day with driving slowly and watching for signs of wolves. We received a report that a mountain lion took down a bighorn sheep between Soda Butte and the Ranger Station (or after that) and that three coyotes were feeding on the carcass but we have not seen anything like that. Later that day we took a short hike towards Tower Fall and stopped at the first turnout and enjoyed the beautiful landscape again.
We will see what the next couple of days will bring. More pictures are available in our gallery as well.
