It has been more than a year since we had our last winter trip to Norway and Finland. Then a pandemic that is still ongoing has brought all our plans on stand by. We had wonderful trips – if possible – through Germany, went hiking quite a lot.
Yet, I have dreamt of a longer road trip taking my own car and drive all the way up from Ludwigshafen all the way north of the arctic cycle.
We spent the first night near Rathenow in Germany, took the ferry from Rostock to Nyshämnam the next day and drove to Forsbacka where we had our first night in Sweden in a wonderful small guest house.
The next day started with a longer trip (650km) further up north to Byske where again we enjoyed Swedish hospitality in a lovely family hotel with exceptional food. Conditions are wintry with temperatures right now between -10°C and -16°C. Unfortunately, most of Sweden and Finland is currently covered with cloud which breaks any chance capturing Northern Lights. Tomorrow we will cross the arctic circle and will enjoy two nights in Abisko where the weather forecast is a little more promising.
